There were
30 scarecrows and 39 groups taking part in this year’s
competition making the event bigger and better than ever. We
raised about £200 for Hall funds with a welcome donations from
Molly Page who ran a craft stall and Jean Quinn who did
refreshments. There were many interesting replies regarding
favourite fairy tale.

All
the scarecrows must have been very good this year since most
people recognised them. The votes were also spread widely.
Scarecrows with votes in all 3
categories were:
Little Miss Muffet & Spider (No 3), Incy
Wincy Spider (No 14), Simple Simon (No 27)
Other scarecrows getting votes in the BEST category were:
Humpty Dumpty (No 2), Elves and
Shoemaker (No 4), Wee Willy Winkie (No 7) Pied Piper (No 8)
Mary Mary Quite Contrary (No 11) Owl & the Pussy Cat (No 12)
Dick Whittington and his Cat (No 15), Jack & the Beanstalk (No
20) Doctor Foster (No 21) Hansel & Gretel (No 24)
Other Scarecrows getting votes in the Scariest Category were:
Rapunzel (No 15A)
Other Scarecrows getting votes in the Funniest Category were:
Pinocchio (No 19), Jack & the Beanstalk
(No 20), Tom Thumb (No 22), Emperor’s New Clothes (No 25),
Robin Hood (No 29)
The Scarecrows causing the most difficulty were:
Peter and the Wolf (No 10). (Confusion
with Popeye the Sailor.) This was more like a cryptic
crossword clue , The Flag was the Blue Peter and on the shirt
and the board was a wolf! Jane and Peter Wilde hid him behind
a bush so people would have to find him and see him up close.
The Emperor’s New Clothes (No 25).
(Confusion with Old King Cole) This was a brainwave by Joy
Dixon on the morning of the competition. Due to pressure of
work she had made only the frame for the Scarecrow. Just time
to add a crown and Hey Presto!
Puss in Boots No 26. Confusion here with
Dick Whittington’s cat who of course was in Scarecrow No 15
and did not wear boots.
Simple Simon No 27. Some confusion with
Little Jack Horner, Georgy Porgy and Knave of Hearts.
Big Bad Wolf No 28. Just Red Riding Hood
was not enough here. The answer had to have the WOLF or,
better still, the BIG BAD WOLF.
Favourite Fairly Tales
Peter Pan lead the field with 5 votes,
but again the votes were widely spread with 20 different tales
or rhymes chosen. Some of the memorable comments are:
Peter Pan.
Because it’s action packed with the best baddie - he really
HOOKS you in. They can fly, it has fairies and the good guys
win!! (Richards-Doyle Family, Cardiff)
We don’t want to grow up either (Rob & Lucy from YHA, St
Davids)
Cinderella (3 Votes)
She gets her prince! (The Youngs, Haverfordwest)
It’s the first fairy story we remember from our childhood and
we all love happy endings (Gemma & Katie Phillips, Solva)
Three little Pigs (3 Votes)
We like saying “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your
house down.” (Amanda, Chle, Iolo, and Elvis Clement,
Carmarthen)
The pigs are fat and funny. In some books two get eaten and in
some books they survive. They are quite dumb except for pig No
3 who was smart. (Will & Polly Graham, Solva)
Elves & Shoemaker ( 2 votes)
My mummy and daddy read this story to us at bedtime (Lydia &
Sophie Lisk, Solva)
Snowhite and the Seven Dwarves (2 Votes)
The dwarves are funny and their personalities remind me of my
relatives! (Williams Family, on holdiay in Solva
Rapunzel (1 vote)
I wish I had long hair (Erin Brodie, aged 4)
